6 Love Letters to Fans in the ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Finale

“Nine-Nine!” The fan-favorite sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine came to an end with an epic finale on September 16, signalling the end of an era. Fans will have to said goodbyes to the NYPD’s 99th precinct after eight hilarious and hijinks-filled seasons on FOX and NBC.

The hour-long episode wrapped up the stories of several characters, included callbacks to previous seasons, reintroduced some familiar faces, and ended the event on a positive note, in true finale fashion. The moments from the Brooklyn Nine-Nine finale that were a love letter to fans are highlighted below.

One Last Heist

There was no way the series could come to an end without a final Hallowe’en Heist! Jake (Andy Samberg) rigged it this time to surprise his friends with his retirement from the NYPD. The heist was full of fun partnerships, tonnes of backstabbing, surprise twists, and heartfelt moments, in true Nine-Nine fashion. Despite the fact that Jake’s plans did not go as planned, it was still one of the best heists in the series, even if Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) was the victor.

Familiar Faces

Fans were treated to a return of familiar faces in the series finale, which was exactly what they got. Gina (Chelsea Peretti) returned triumphantly to aid the crew in the heist and brag about how wealthy she has become since leaving the precinct. Pimento (Jason Mantzoukas) also reappeared to help Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) with her heist plan, only to disappear on yet another perilous adventure. We also saw the return of Tim Meadows as Jake’s cannibal prison friend Caleb, who tried to eat him once again, along with frequent heist helper and Charles’ (Joe Lo Truglio) doppelgänger Bill (Winston Story) and Captain Holt’s (Andre Braugher) loveable dog Cheddar. The squad’s visit to the grave of Holt’s nemesis, Madeline Wuntch, was perhaps the most amusing cameo (Kyra Sedgwick).

Callbacks to Memorable Moments

Following the first few leads, the team went to the break room vending machine, which was once again broken, and the interrogation room, which reminded them of Jake’s famous “I Want It That Way” interrogation. In a hilarious flashback, viewers learned that Jake tried unsuccessfully to recreate that moment several times.

The crew returned to the Storage Solutions warehouse, where they worked their first case together in the pilot, as part of Holt’s heist plan, and though they did not visit Shaw’s bar, it was supposed to be the end location of Amy’s (Melissa Fumero) plan. One of the most touching scenes in the episode was when Jake and Charles officially became best friends, which viewers had never seen before.

The Return of Running Gags

Terry’s (Terry Crews) strength has always been a running gag throughout the series, and the finale didn’t hold back in emphasising it. Jake kept comparing Terry’s personality and physicality to that of the Kool-Aid Man before tearing up a fake office during his Captain interview, much to Terry’s chagrin.

Another running gag reappeared, this time with Holt attempting one of Jake’s “Title of Your Sex Tape” jokes, the series’ final instalment. During their conversation, Holt mentioned Jake’s perception of him as a father figure. When he told Jake that he would be proud to have a son like him, their relationship came full circle.

Final Goodbye to the Precinct

While several characters had plans to end the heist in various locations. The precinct was the best place to do so. The gang simply popped some champagne and spent one last night together in the building. After accepting their defeat to Hitchcock. Jake took his nameplate from his desk and boarded the elevator with the rest of the group. At the end of the night, capping off the group’s journey together perfectly.

The Continuation of the Halloween Heist

The episode flashed forward one year to the next Hallowe’en. Where Jake and the squad returned to continue the annual heist. “We’re in each other’s lives forever, whether you like it or not.”  Jake assured a surprised Terry as they parted ways, saying.  “We’re in each other’s lives forever, whether you like it or not.” Though the events has come to an end. It’s comforting to know that the crew will always be there for one another and that the fun will never end.
