Daddy will not be returning. Hilary Duff of How I Met Your Father asks Neil Patrick Harris if he’d consider repeating his Emmy-nominated role as ladies’ man Barney Stinson on the HIMYM sequel series in the latest episode of his Wondercade newsletter. The Barnacle’s “antics” wouldn’t fly in the #MeToo age, Harris believes, and the show would be better off without him.
“I’m concerned about going on your show (insert joke here),” Harris says. “Barney’s antics, his blatant delusions of grandeur, will almost certainly bring everyone into trouble.” So, until he’s changed his ways or joined a nunnery (insert joke), I’m not sure it’s in anyone’s best interests.”
Meanwhile, Duff believes in every con, hustle, hoodwink, gambit, flimflam, stratagem. And bamboozle Barney has used to woo, dine, and score with women would land him in serious legal jeopardy.
“I’m not sure how you feel about this,” she says, “but I’m pretty sure Barney would be in jail in 2022.” “I’m assuming they made [Barney-esque character Valentina] a woman because we live in a world where females are gaining power!”
In a Twitter thread last summer, original series creator Carter Bays lamented the Mother-creative ship’s missteps. “I won’t go into specifics,” he said at the time. “But I’d love to go into an edit room and go George Lucas on this thing. And remove certain things I wish weren’t in there, and I bet nobody would miss it.”
Following a viewing of Season 3’s 18th episode, “Rebound Bro.” Barney assisted sad sack Randy Wharmpess (recurring guest star Will Forte) in picking up women at MacLaren’s. Bays offered his thoughts. To improve Randy’s small talk, Barney enlisted the help of a hesitant Robin. If she didn’t comply, he threatened to release a sex tape of them together.
Before the premiere of How I Met Your Father, fans speculated that Barney could be the titular father (doubtful). Some believe he’ll be revealed as Duff’s father, and others think he’ll be told as Duff’s mother (slightly more likely).
