This is How Matthew Perry lost Tip of His Middle Finger in An Accident

Matthew Perry is a comedian and actor who rose to prominence in the 1990s as Chandler Bing on the hit television show Friends. Perry had dabbled in television before landing the role in Friends, but his performance catapulted him to stardom.

Perry is still famous among fans worldwide, and he recently reunited with his Friends co-stars for a reunion special. While much of Perry’s personal life is well-known, even diehard Friends fans may be unaware of one interesting fact about the actor: a childhood injury that the show’s writers were able to incorporate into a fan-favorite episode.

How did Matthew Perry’s middle finger lose its tip?

Perry was born in the year 1969 in the state of Massachusetts. His mother primarily raised Perry in Ontario, and he showed an early interest in acting. According to The Things, Perry was three years old when he shut a door on his hand. Perry lost the top inch of his middle finger due to the gruesome incident.

Doctors performed miracles on the toddler’s finger, and the injury eventually healed. Perry’s missing fingertip didn’t stop him from pursuing his dreams of stardom in show business, and in the late 1980s, he was cast in shows like Second Chance. Although Perry’s injury may have seemed insignificant at the time, as his celebrity grew, fans began to notice that his middle finger was different.

‘Friends’ writers adapted Matthew Perry’s injury into a show episode.

Many fans had noticed that Perry’s middle finger was the same length as his pointer finger when he played Chandler Bing in Friends. According to The Mirror, Friends writers decided to write a special episode in the fifth season to pay homage to Perry’s childhood injury. A flashback sequence in the episode “The One with All the Thanksgivings” shows Monica and Chandler getting into a fight. Which ends with Monica dropping a knife and severing a portion of Chandler’s toe.

In the episode, Chandler has been taken to the hospital. But his toe cannot be reattached because Monica mixed it with a baby carrot. For fans, the episode is a witty nod to Perry’s real-life trauma. As well as all the debate over Perry’s visibly shorter middle finger.
