Camera Man Error in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

The sequel to the Harry Potter franchise was released in 2002 and was a massive hit with audiences. Director Chris Columbus delivered another strong outing for Warner Bros.  A fun continuation of the young wizard’s journey, but not perfect.

Since the update of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, fans have discovered a significant error. This isn’t a plot hole or continuity error based on the franchise’s revelations. Instead, the Chamber of Secrets’ gaffe is similar to many other productions that have left a crew member in a scene. It’s a fun fact for Harry Potter fans who know where to look.

When Harry and Draco Malfoy face off in a wizarding duel, the camera guy fails in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Draco uses a spell to knock Harry down, but Harry fights back and knocks Draco back. Severus Snape, his Slytherin House student, helps him up. If you want to find it, it’s at 1 hour 7 minutes 50 seconds in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Below is a screenshot of the mistake with the camera guy circled:

People have debated how Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ camera guy mistake made it into the movie. One theory is that the crew and director Chris Columbus cut corners because child actors can only film for so long per day.  It’s unclear how the error made it to the final cut.

While the camera guy in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets may have shattered some viewers’ illusions of moviemaking, it is far from the first instance. “Jeans Guy” appeared in The Mandalorian season 2 and Game of Thrones season 8.
