It is hard to imagine both Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc in any other sitcom aside from ‘Friends’. However, the truth is, the duo came very close to appearing alongside one another in a huge sitcom. ABC had different ideas for ‘Modern Family’ and they involved both Lisa and Matt. The two were considered for the roles of Claire and Phil. In truth, we can’t picture anyone at the helm aside from Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell.
Out Of Character
It took years for Kudrow to finally return to a sitcom. She admits at the time, not only was she not ready for the gig but in addition, she just didn’t seem like the part was right for her. She elaborated with Access, “I thought, ‘I don’t know what I’d do with it,’” Lisa said when asked about reading the role of Claire Dunphy, which eventually went to Julie Bowen. “And, so, you know, that’s all. Julie Bowen does know what to do with it, so, it’s all as it should be.”
LeBlanc felt the same way, he was liked the script and in fact, he thought it was great. Again, the problem he didn’t feel like it was a fit, “It came across my desk with an offer to play Ty Burrell’s role,” LeBlanc told USA TODAY. (Producer 20th Century Fox Television confirms this). “I remember reading it thinking, this is a really good script, (but) I’m not the guy for this. I’d be doing the project an injustice to take this. I know what I can do, I know what I can’t do. Plus, I’m having too much fun laying on the couch.”
Burrell was well aware when he auditioned for the role that there were no guarantees, even if he was told he’d be great for the part, “They said, “We have this pilot we wrote and this part with you in mind.” I’ve been in that situation enough to know that doesn’t mean you have the part, that ultimately a network and studio have to sign off. But it still doesn’t save you from emotionally going there.” The audition process was long but it turned out to be well worth it, as he was a perfect fit for the show. We really can’t imagine the show with anyone else, aside from Ty and Julie. Though it is interesting to think about LeBlanc and Kudrow reuniting alongside one another for such a project.
